Slight diversion from the content of the last few posts, but there's always justification for squeezing in another Sir Ken video. This one is another TED video from March 2010 and raises some great points, especially the need to move away from a linear view of a person's journey through education to a more organic approach. Also, as someone with very young children the quote about 'college starts in kindergarden' - I'm with you Ken, No,No, No it doesn't !

Lots of good stuff about at the moment, and here's a useful slideshow and short video clip on Technology in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector based on some research by LLUK.

Learning theories and technology - A timeline
As my students are about undertake some research on recent (last hundred years) learning theories I thought I'd post this video by Dallas McPheeters called 5000 Year Timeline of Learning Theories, (which I came across when looking for material on teaching and learing in Second Life). It's not definitive ( in terms of 20th century theory) by any stretch, but it does link nicely in terms of my current teaching and my interest in technology and the possible futures for teaching and learning.

Twitter for educational purposes and some action research
Having slept (actually I didn't that much, as my mind was racing) on the information I posted yesterday, my thoughts have been filled today with how am I going to broaden my use of social media and more importantly start integrating it into my teaching ? Just spent a bit of time doing some more research and came across a number of excellent Powerpoint presentations on Slideshare one of which was this great tutorial on how to use Twitter for educational purposes by Maggie Verster.
Having watched the tutorial, I've decided I will sign up to Twitter and carry out a little bit of action research on it's potential uses !

Virtual worlds - The Future of Education
I think so.. for the current and next generation of young students where Xboxes and PS3's are part and parcel of their everyday lived experience this is where it will be at...again get with it people..it's already here.

Collaboration in Teaching and learning
Collaboration, as Sir Ken Robinson states 'is the stuff of growth' and the array of social media is now making it easier than ever before for individual and groups (disparate in nature) to come together around single issues and change the world ! Clay Shirky book 'Here Comes Everybody' is an excellent thesis on this . But what about collaboration in Teaching and Learning ? Well, hopefully this video will provide some food for thought on the potential use of Web 2.0 technology to develop new pedagogical approaches to teaching and learning in the 21st century....which if you hadn't noticed is now 11 years old ! So come on people wake up and get with it, this is fundamental societal change happening here and as teacher educators we need to be more responsive to this change in our practice and in our discussions about teaching and learning with our students !
Animated RSA talk - Changing Education Paradigms - Sir Ken Robinson
Another great lecture by Sir Ken, beautifully animated. Unfortunately it's only part of the lecture but definitely worth watching on a number of levels.
Below is the full lecture, as usual very entertaining as well as informative.

Happy New Year ! It's time to start Blogging
Yes, it's come round again, that time of year where we all make false promises and claim things are going to be different from now on! And I'm no exception. One of my New Year resolutions this year is to blog more frequently (yeah, yeah..we've heard it all before... no honestly I am)! I was REALLY excited back in September, then for one reason or another I've let things slip again...but no more !
Back in the summer I decided I was going to use this blog to focus on my interest in the use of digital technology to support teaching & learning (or at least explore some of the uses of digital technology and its' potential application for teaching & learning) and I've been enthused again (nothing like the latest copy of Futurelab's 'Vision' magazine to set the mind racing). This time it's on seeing MIT grad student David Merrill's demonstrate of 'siftables' on TED ..check it out below.
I can see lots of possibilities, not just for children but also adults. I could definitely see their use with adults with numeracy difficulties....and my Cert Ed/PCGE students !
